CALL FOR PAPERS

SECOND INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON POLYMER SURFACE MODIFICATION: RELEVANCE TO ADHESION

MAY 24-26, 1999

SHERATON NEWARK AIRPORT

NEWARK, NJ

Polymeric materials are used for a wide range of applications in a variety of technologies from metallized plastics to biomedical uses. Proper adhesion characteristics are vital to the success of any practical implementation of these materials. Though polymers are generally not very adherent, proper surface modification can result in greatly improved adhesion without altering bulk properties. Recently there has been a great deal of R&D activity in devising new ways to modify polymer surfaces. There are essentially two broad categories of surface modification techniques: one in which new chemical moieties are created by reactions with gaseous ions, radiation etc., and another category which is comprised of techniques where a separate layer of another material is deposited on a surface. This symposium is the natural follow on to the first international conference on this topic held in 1993 in Las Vegas. This the second symposium will follow up on the latest developments in this tremendously active field. The primary focus of this meeting will be to provide a forum for the discussion of cutting edge advancements in the field and to review and consolidate the accomplishments which have been achieved thus far.
PAPERS DEALING WITH ALL TECHNIQUES FOR POLYMER SURFACE MODIFICATION WILL BE CONSIDERED INCLUDING:

  • Plasma, Ultraviolet and laser irradiation

  • Ion beam and flame processing

  • Mechanical roughening

  • Monolayer deposition, grafting and wet chemical

POLYMER SURFACE MODIFICATION FOR ADHESION IMPROVEMENT OF:

  • Metal layers (metallized plastics)

  • Organic coatings, inks, composites, microorganisms

APPLICATIONS AND SURFACE CHARACTERIZATION

  • Packaging, composites, biological implants

  • Microelectronics, aerospace, marine... etc.

  • All methods for characterization of surface chemistry and morphology, (ESCA, SIMS, AFM ...etc)
This symposium is being organized under the direction of Dr. K. L. Mittal, Editor, Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, in cooperation with the C4 Technologies Company. A proceedings volume is planned for this symposium and further details will be provided in due course. Please notify the conference chairman of your intentions to present a paper as early as possible. An abstract of about 200 words should be sent by February 10, 1999 to the conference chairman by any of the following methods:
